A rare set of four sculptural space-age chairs from Pierre Guariche’s “Starlook Ultralight” range for Meurop, a belgian furniture company: one Luna armchair and three Polaris chairs.

Guariche designed the range between 1965 and 1967, and it consisted of four models: Polaris, Luna, Mars and Jupiter. Black imitation leather chairs on metal feet, covered by a black plastic shell. They stand on round black tulip feet. The shapes recall a wine glass or a capsule, and they’re a fine example of the optimism of the moon-landing years. They are all swiveling.

These are the original early versions with the round tulip foot. In 1969 the range got chrome-plated bases with crossed legs and was renamed Paris, Tours, Nice and Menton. Those later versions are often confused with these.

The Luna is the wider of the two models. It has a deeper, rounded tub shape with wrap-around armrests. The three Polaris chairs are more upright, with a pointed back and a loose round seat cushion. Together they make a striking dining set, or a statement group in a lounge, bar or office.

Dimensions:

Polaris: Diameter: 50cm - Height: 72cm - Seating height: 46cm

Luna (W x D x H): 63 x 50 x 70cm - seating height: 46cm.

Condition
Good vintage condition, with signs of age and use that fit the period. The bases have very light scratches, but no cracks. All four chairs are structurally sound and stable. In full original condition, only the upside of the seat cushions has been renewed. Please see the photos for a detailed view.
